Three New Maldives Resorts Make A Case For Off-Season Visits

Rain passes quickly, crowds thin, and three new island properties reward travellers who book anyway.

Between June and October, the Maldives empties out. Airfares get more enticing, rates ease, and the archipelago’s reputation for monsoon downpours keeps casual visitors away. If you decide to go, however, perks await: warmer water, quieter reefs, and a stretch when whale sharks and manta rays move closer to shore than at any other point in the year.

Three new private island resorts are betting that travellers will notice. Each has opened with the wet season built into its design, from covered dining pavilions to spa programmes and in-villa menus suited to a rainy afternoon.

Noku Maldives, Vignette Collection, occupies a single island in the Noonu Atoll, its 50 villas split between beachfront and overwater settings and ranging from 175 to 400 sqm. Many include private pools, and a “Destination Dining” concept sets couples at a table on the sand rather than in a restaurant.

Onshore, cultural programming leans on Boduberu drumming and cooking classes; underwater, the snorkelling and diving sit close enough to the villas to fill a wet afternoon without a long boat transfer. Rates begin at USD613++ per night, including breakfast.

Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives, part of The Atollia by Centara Hotels & Resorts, a multi-island destination in North Malé Atoll, sits a short speedboat ride from the airport, a proximity that matters more in squally weather than fair.

Its beachfront and overwater villas come with a private pool, a Jacuzzi, or both, and five restaurants, including a live tandoor and teppan grill, give guests somewhere to retreat when the skies turn. Bookings of four nights or more currently include complimentary speedboat transfers, an offer worth weighing against the airport’s distance from central Malé.

V Villas Maldives at Mirihi, an MGallery property in South Ari Atoll, keeps its footprint deliberately small: 42 villas, four of them new overwater additions with private pools, reached by a 30-minute seaplane transfer.

The resort’s defining experience is a day aboard the Mirihi Thari yacht, which threads through the atoll’s channels in search of whale sharks and turtles while onboard chefs handle the canapés. As the sun sets, guests can dine at Muraka, where Maldivian lobster anchors a menu built around the ocean, or settle in at the Akoya Sea Lounge for cocktails. Rates start from USD600 per night.
